Paul Harris, the founder of rotary, was born at Racine, Wisconisn, USA, on 19th April 1868, when he was 3 years old, he was taken to Waliinfford, Vermont to live with his paternal grandparents, the Black River Academy of Ludlow, Vermont and Vermont Academy at Saxtons river, prepared him for his studies at the university of Vermont. Following his graduation from the law school of the university of Iowa in 1891, he decided to spend the next five years in seeing the world and in coming to know his fellow men, before settling down to practice law in Chicago. He worked as a newspaper reporter, a business college teacher, a stock company actor, a cowboy and sales man for a granite concern and settled down as a lawyer in 1896. Married to Jean Thomson, he had no children.

For the next several years, he devoted a great deal of time on reflecting on conditions of life and business and by 1905 he had formulated a definite philosophy of business and relations. Paul's idea was that businessmen could get together periodically in sprit of camaraderie to enjoy each other's company and to enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances, talking it over with three of his clients Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant, Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor, he conceived the idea of organizing a club which came into being on the 23rd of February, 1905 when they met in Gus Loehr's office room 711 in the unity building. This was the nucleus for the thousands of rotary club. Which were later organized throughout the world, Paul Harris named the new club "Rotary" because the members were to meet in rotation in their various places of business. During his lifetime he received many recognition and 7 awards from different countries, including the coveted legion of honour award by France.
